“Theories, Methods and Practice Perspectives in Party Politics: Investigating Parties and Party Systems in young and established democracies”

September 2nd – September 6th 2024

The forthcoming Standing Group on Political Parties Summer School will be organized by Kristina Weissenbach, Andreas Blätte and Anna Augusto Ezequiel dos Santos and hosted by the Department of Social Sciences, the Institute for Political Science, and the NRW School of Governance at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Over five enriching days, the school will provide a unique opportunity for young scholars working on different aspects of political parties to gain theoretical, analytical, and practical knowledge from some of the most renowned experts in the field: Fernando Casal-Bertoa, Simon Franzmann, Anika Gauja, Thomas Poguntke, Sebnem Yardimci-Geyikci (among others). Participants will receive feedback on their PhD projects, research papers, or other research projects.

You will have the chance to network with other young scholars as well as with senior academics and practitioners in the field of party politics, What’s more, the Department of Social Sciences will provide a platform for you to connect with party researchers from different world regions, including Sub-Saharan Africa, East-Asia, and Europe

The program will consist of a series of lectures as well as in-depth discussions of participants’ research projects, a practitioners’ roundtable in cooperation with the NRW School of Governance as well as social activities. The Department of Social Sciences @University Duisburg-Essen will provide a platform for you to connect with party researchers from different world regions, including Sub-Saharan Africa, East-Asia and Europe. Since methods and data have become more diverse in the field of party politics, the program will include sessions on research design, methods, data collection and analysis in party politics research. We will offer an intense schedule on major approaches to research on party politics at the macro, meso and micro level in young and established democracies covering different world regions:

  • National and transnational party systems and parties
  • Party system institutionalization
  • Parties and cilvil society
  • Party types and party families
  • „Populist“ parties and „digital“ parties
  • Party finance, regulation, corruption, party bans, party funding and party assistance
  • Party organization, party institutionalization, party change, party reform
  • Party competition, party manifestos and coalition-building
  • Party candidates, party membership, intra-party democracy
